How2Recycle® Label Program
Each version of our store drop-off recyclable pouch from the TruRenu® portfolio meets the requirements for the How2Recycle® store drop-off program². The label guides consumers through four easy steps to complete the recycling process:
- Make sure the pouch is empty
- Shake out any loose crumbs or food residue
- Remove any remaining liquid inside the pouch
- Drop off at a participating local store
Most curbside recycling programs do not accept plastic film, so the curbside bin is not the right destination for these pouches. Drop-off points sit near the entrance of most large supermarkets, giving shoppers a convenient way to return film plastic without contaminating the local recycling stream. Brands can also add a QR code to pouch packaging that links customers to nearby drop-off locations.
2Brands and companies who are interested in using our recyclable pouches will need to become members of the How2Recycle® store drop-off program in order to use the label on their own custom-printed pouch.
Store drop-off pouches do more than recycle cleanly. They extend shelf life to reduce food waste, use less plastic upfront, weigh less to cut greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel consumption during shipping, and require less water and energy during manufacturing. The result is an optimal packaging solution that supports your brand’s sustainability story from the shelf at the grocery store all the way back to the drop-off bin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a recyclable pouch?
A recyclable pouch is a flexible packaging format made from plastic film that can be returned through a designated recycling program rather than thrown away. Glenroy’s TruRenu® recyclable stand-up pouches are designed for the How2Recycle® store drop-off program, where shoppers return film plastic at participating retailers so the material can re-enter the recycling stream.
Can I put recyclable pouches in my curbside recycling bin?
Most curbside recycling programs do not accept plastic film, and placing pouches in the curbside bin can contaminate the local recycling stream. Recyclable stand-up pouches should be returned to a participating drop-off point, typically located near the entrance of supermarkets and major retailers.
What happens to pouches after store drop-off?
Recyclable pouches collected through the NexTrex® Recycling Program are sorted, processed, and used as raw material in Trex composite decking and other new products. This keeps film plastic out of landfills and gives the recyclable material a useful second life, supporting the circular economy.
How do recyclable pouches compare to rigid plastic packaging?
Compared to rigid plastic canisters, recyclable pouches use up to 77% less plastic by weight, 78% less fossil fuel, and 79% fewer greenhouse gas emissions. They also weigh less, which lowers shipping emissions and direct costs across the supply chain. The reduced environmental impact is one of the biggest reasons brands switch from rigid plastic to flexible packaging.
What products work well in recyclable stand-up pouches?
Glenroy’s recyclable pouches are ideal for pet food, personal care, and food products such as snacks, baking mixes, and confectionery. Both barrier and non-barrier options are available depending on shelf life and product protection requirements.
Can my brand use the How2Recycle® label on its pouches?
To display the How2Recycle® store drop-off label on a custom-printed pouch, your brand needs to become a member of the How2Recycle® program. Glenroy can guide you through the requirements and produce pouches that meet program specifications.
